Genuine Student

Genuine Student Requirement for Student Visas

The Australian Government has replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for student visas with a Genuine Student (GS) requirement. This is effective for applications lodged on and after March 23, 2024.

For more information please visit the following link.

Important Note:** This requirement does NOT apply to applications lodged before March 23, 2024. Those applications will still be assessed against the GTE requirement.

Genuine Student Criteria

All applicants for a student visa must be a genuine applicant for entry. They must intend to stay as a student and demonstrate that studying in Australia is the primary reason for their visa application. The GS requirement aims to attract students who, after studying, can develop skills needed in Australia and potentially apply for permanent residence.

Demonstrating You Are a Genuine Student

To be granted a student visa, all applicants must demonstrate they meet the genuine student criterion or the genuine student dependent criterion. The online student visa application form will ask you the following questions to address the GS criteria:

  • Details of your current circumstances, including ties to family, community, employment, and financial situation.
  • Why you wish to study this specific course in Australia with this particular education provider. This should also explain your understanding of the course requirements, studying, and living in Australia.
  • How completing the course will benefit you.
  • Any other relevant information you would like to include (maximum 150 words per question and written in English).

There is an additional question for applicants who have previously held a student visa or are applying from a non-student visa within Australia.

Supporting Your Application

Along with the application form responses, you must attach supporting documents to your ImmiAccount. Generic statements without evidence will not be given much weight. Providing evidence to support your claims is crucial.

Overall Assessment

The department considers your overall personal circumstances when assessing whether you are a genuine student.
